Zui Zui Zukkorobashi

(ずいずいずっころばし)

There’s nothing like a good nonsense song to round out a collection. I loved the sound of this from the very first time I heard it and as I shared it with people along the way, they all agreed: the meaning of the song is a mystery! The loose translation (with many sound effects) is below:
zui zui zukkorobashi
sesame miso zui
tea urn tumbles
toppinshan (sound effect for breaking)
if you can run away (sound effect for running away)
the mouse in the rice basket
eats the rice, squeaks,
squeak, squeak, squeak!
father tries calling,
mother tries calling,
who is the one around the well who broke the rice bowl?
